Honors Peer Mentors

08/01/2017

Description

The Honors Peer Mentor program is intended to facilitate new students' transition into the University Honors Program. Each selected peer mentor will lead a group of incoming first-year students through a 13-week program consisting of small-group meetings, large-group sessions, one-on-one mentoring, and mentor-designed and led enrichment activities (Honors Impacts). The curriculum will focus on Honors Program requirements, how to become involved on campus, and academic success strategies, and is intended to foster an interactive and involved experience, benefitting mentees and mentors alike.

Roles

I served as an Honors Peer Mentor from 2017 to 2018 and help lead both large and small mentoring groups. I facilitated group discussions between mentees and helped new students successfully transition to the Honors Program. I also conducted individual mentee meetings and planned impactful and enriching activities around campus.

Takeaways

I served for two years as a mentor mainly because I had a great mentor during my freshman year and wanted to give back to the honors program and impact others. I had a great group of kids and by managing and advising these groups of kids, I learned to be organized, devoted, and compassionate. I made many strong connections with other honors students and had a blast doing it.
